People say it’s the journey that matters most and I’ve found that to be true. I was born in Shreveport, Louisiana and I grew up in Marshall, Texas in the thick piney woods region. I come from a family with a lot of teachers, roughnecks and engineers, but I’m the first lawyer. I attribute my skillset and work ethic to the family genes and the way Mom and Dad raised me. I’ve always had a job since I was fifteen, from flipping burgers and washing dishes to auto parts sales and construction, but since I can remember, I wanted to be a lawyer. David Sanders is now an experienced and successful national maritime injury attorney and offshore accident lawyer at the Daspit Law Firm.
My wife and I couldn’t afford for me to go to law school right after graduating from Texas A&M so I spent nearly three years as an auto claims adjuster for a major insurance company. I learned to evaluate what a claim was worth and I became skilled at reconstructing accidents. But most importantly, I feel this job afforded me an education in humankind. My customers came from all walks of life and I appreciated that they had often just experienced a traumatic event, whether someone slammed into them at a red light or someone busted out their window just to steal a phone charger and their child’s backpack. I asked questions and tried to learn something from everyone I met. And it wasn’t rare for a customer to ask for a hug; because I really cared, and they knew it.
My time as an adjuster only solidified my dream to become a lawyer and, eventually, I was able to attend law school. I now see people through some of the scariest and most stressful times of their lives. I love working for my people, not big businesses with unlimited resources. I think it has something to do with my name being David—I just can’t help but want to stand up to and defeat the Goliaths of the world.
In his down down time, David Sanders enjoys spending time with his lovely wife, their son and two yellow Labradors. I’m very close to those I’m close to. I always have music playing and I like to cook outside. I try to play guitar and I try to play golf. I also like to hunt when I get the chance and I read a lot. I spend as much time as I can relaxing at the beach and fishing in the warm Gulf Coast waters from Galveston to Corpus Christi, but you’re most likely to find me at Surfside Beach.
My practice is focused mostly on auto personal injury, but I handle all types of personal injury cases. As a former adjuster, I know how insurance companies think and I’m well aware of their tactics. I have also worked on several Jones Act, unseaworthiness and maintenance and cure cases. Much of my life has been spent in, on and around the water. As a fisherman, I have a unique understanding and appreciation for the sea. I love the sounds, smells and breezes, and I love it when I get my sea legs. At the same time, I know how dangerous it is out there and I hold a special place in my heart for the men and women who brave the conditions year-round to perform a job that is vital to this country.
I’m truly passionate about helping my people get what they deserve. Oftentimes we can reach an agreement with the other side without going to court. However, if it’s a fight they want, I’ll give them a fight they may live to regret. I believe there to be no more fulfilling work than helping my brothers and sisters in need, which is why I do what I do. Contact me and I’ll see if I can help you like I’ve helped my other clients.
